As part of the Maine Department of Transportation’s Village Partnership Initiative (VPI), the Town of Woodstock, Maine, is undertaking a transformative effort to strengthen its village center through a comprehensive strategy of multimodal planning, placemaking, and rural revitalization. In partnership with Gorillapalmer Consulting Engineers, Aceto Kimball Landscape Architecture (AKLA) is leading the public realm and landscape design vision, focusing on the integration of transportation infrastructure with human-scaled design and community identity. Woodstock’s village center serves as the heart of civic life for the community and a gateway for nearby recreation and tourism in western Maine. The Village Partnership Initiative aims to make this core more walkable, safer, and welcoming, while reflecting the distinct cultural and ecological character of the region. AKLA is designing a complete and context-sensitive streetscape that enhances pedestrian comfort, defines village character, and integrates seamlessly with vehicular circulation improvements engineered by Gorrill Palmer. The plan introduces street trees, benches, lighting, and native plantings to transform the public realm into a usable and attractive civic space, not just a transportation corridor.
