Sanford Roundabout

AKLA was commissioned to develop a concept design study for a new roundabout at a prominent gateway into the City of Sanford. The project aims to enhance both traffic flow and placemaking. Inspired by Sanford’s storied textile industry, the design celebrates the city’s industrial heritage by referencing the colorful threads once woven in its historic mills. A proposed sculptural installation captures the dynamic motion of yarn being spun—abstract, fluid, and vibrant. The form and color palette evoke the energy and craft of textile production, creating a visual landmark that is both contemporary and rooted in place.
