AKLA was hired by the City of Portland to iterate design concepts and feasibility for the potential conversion of an existing public street into a pedestrian space or combination of uses. Four alternatives were developed and illustrated with varying degrees of pedestrian use, vehicular use, and parklet space. Considerations during the design and visioning process included improving ADA and accessibility for all, creating a welcoming space, ensuring pedestrian/public safety, considering traffic circulation (or the elimination of vehicles), understanding the dynamics of a vibrant commercial district, improving drainage issues, and last but certainly not least–placemaking.
