Wayfinding

Basalt Wayfinding

Basalt Wayfinding began with the design and construction of Basalt’s entry monument along Emma Road and Basalt Ave. This monument pays homage to the history and culture of Basalt which includes symbology of railroad ties with a large steel beam, the incorporation of basalt stone veneer, and a steel trout emblem to embrace the confluence of Basalt’s two rivers that are well loved. AKLA worked with the Basalt Sign Committee during design/construction of this monument. Basalt signage evolved into wayfinding signs constructed with a metal mesh exhibiting a river/wave pattern, as well as the Basalt Business Center Monumentation which includes a sign that was constructed on ‘stilts’ to allow water to flow beneath it as a design feature. The whimsy of this signage family also includes artful wayfinding ‘cues’ constructed of steel laser jet cutouts of the four different types of trout (and their scale patterns) living in the Roaring Fork and Fryingpan Rivers.
