Nick was born and raised in Southern Maine before attending college in Vermont and eventually the Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture program at Colorado State University. While in Colorado, Nick worked as a designer for several large firms where he gained experience contributing to large-scale community master plans, transportation and open space corridor studies, parks, and gardens in the high rockies. It was in the Roaring Fork Valley where Nick cultivated his passion for design as a tool to communicate transformative ideas at the intersection of urbanism and conservation. At the core of Nick’s love of our environment is his experience as a lifelong downhill and nordic skier, mountain climber, surfer, and cyclist. Nick loves to explore the natural world and find parallels between nature's patterns and the way we shape our communities. Nick also enjoys the design process as an exploration of opportunities to bring us closer to our planet and each other. Nick founded AKLA’s Portland office in 2016 with his best friend, life partner, and fellow landscape architect, Caitlin. Nick and Caitlin have one spirited daughter, Mia. When not in the Portland office, Nick can be found in his home and studio and AKLA’s mountain office in Jackson, NH. Nick is a CLARB-certified, licensed professional landscape architect in three states, including New Hampshire, North Carolina, and Colorado.
