Waynflete

Waynflete is a private school located in Portland, Maine, that educates students K-12 grade. The Waynflete campus is in the process of constructing a new athletic facility and wellness center in the heart of the campus. The new building is connected to classrooms and accessible via an underground tunnel. AKLA was hired to provide design services in support of the adjacent streetscape and neighborhood context/scale, as well as to provide a cohesive play space for the ‘lower school’ (ages 3-5) students and the surrounding campus . The play space includes a mud kitchen, tactile material changes, planting and permeable black locust pavers. The design also includes welcoming space outside of the entry vestibules with seating and paving cues that designate significant entry nodes.
